'Romantasy', a blend of fantasy and romance, has seen a surge in popularity recently, with numerous titles within this genre gaining viral status on social media platforms like TikTok, where enthusiasts are known as #BookTok.
Romancing the Data, a romance-focused website, has sifted through 53 top fantasy romance and romantasy book lists to identify the leading titles in the genre.
Claiming the top spot was the popular A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas, which is unlikely to shock fans of the genre who are familiar with its widespread acclaim.
The team at Romancing the Data praised the series, saying: "A captivating fantasy where a huntress enters a faerie realm, facing romance, danger, and a deadly curse. Beauty and the Beast meets dark magic."
Sarah J. Maas's work dominated the list, with her Throne of Glass series ranking eighth and the Crescent City series also featuring at number 19.
Rebecca Yarros's Fourth Wing series secured the second position, boasting nearly three million ratings on Goodreads and an impressive average of 4.58 out of five stars, reports the Mirror US.
A glowing five-star review stated: "This book is a rollercoaster of twists and had me so hooked from the start! Not once did it feel boring or like I should just skim something, and for once, I know the hype was so worth it!"
One enthusiastic fan expressed their newfound love for a book, writing: "I am officially OBSESSED with this book! Having turned the last page over an hour ago, I'm still staring into the void, having no idea what to do with myself, and genuinely considering going back and re-reading it again straight away. It's THAT GOOD."
Third on the list the widely talked about 'From Blood and Ash' series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which has gained popularity on TikTok.
The creators of the list summed up the series as: "A fierce maiden destined for divinity breaks free from duty, facing forbidden love, dark secrets, and a kingdom on the brink of war."
Completing the top five favourites, 'The Serpent and The Wings of Night' by Carissa Broadbent and 'Divine Rivals' by Rebecca Ross made the cut, with Ross's work acclaimed as the winner of the Goodreads Choice Award in the Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction category for 2023.
