The end is approaching for the last surviving tree within the initial two blocks of Cedar Street in Julesburg.
As recently as 10 to 15 years ago, trees lined the downtown business area. The earliest of these were planted before 1992—possibly around a decade earlier, according to former town manager Allen Coyne. He mentioned that the intention was to replace them every 20 to 25 years, but due to a lack of interest in replanting, they were ultimately removed between 2010 and 2015.
These trees often caused issues as they outgrew their designated areas. Sidewalks became uneven, leaves cluttered the streets and complicated snow clearing efforts, sap dripped onto vehicles while birds contributed with droppings as well.
The tree’s removal coincides with the new sidewalk project in the downtown area. The first two blocks of Cedar will get new concrete with exception of the Town Hall and the Stretesky Pavilion walks. After months of delay, the work is expected to begin as soon as this coming week. Community Economic Development of Sedgwick County Executive Director Rhonda Graham has hired KP Concrete and Design of Englewood to head up first phase of the $300,000 project.
Mud is expected to be locally sourced from Ritchey’s Redi Mix of Julesburg.
Generally, businesses are anticipated to stay open with a few exceptions. The process of pouring concrete is expected to take up to three weeks, including weather-related days factored into the timeline.
Additional sidewalks in the area will be poured at a later time.
